I have a crackpot theory that Bandai contracted out the development of the Tamaotch to another company. Its programming is so weird and bears absolutely no resemblance to any other Tamagotchi model. (whereas on the other hand, Genjintch/Mothra/Yasashii all share some similarities, so I'd guess they were all developed in-house) Particularly I think it's this "Studio K&K" that hosted their old website: Studio K&K (archive.org)
Each character has its own timer until the next sickness (i.e. Ashitchi is 18 hours). 1 candy decrements this timer by 1 hour. There is a bit of a subtle point here that if the 1s place of the timer is 0 or 1, then candy won't drop it to 0. This means that candy won't immediately make it sick, but also it means that if for example, it has 17 hours left until the next sickness (0x1 0x1 - the counters are in hexadecimal) then you have to wait 2 hours, and then you can feed candies again to drop down to 1 hour. This is why my recommended strat for getting Baradorutchi/Tamaotch is to feed 14 candies every 2 hours until it gets sick; that's the max you can feed at any given time to influence the sickness countdown.
